Real Madrid VS Espanyol 3-0 |02-02-10| Highlights by RMN
Real Madrid defeated Espanyol at the Bernabeu on Saturday night to keep the gap at the top at five points. Los Merengues used the same eleven that had served them well last weekend while Espanyol played the lone striker Osvaldo up front.
With Barca having won earlier the pressure was on Madrid to keep up the pace and they had a dream start. After just four minutes Sergio Ramos rose highest to nod Esteban Granero's corner well past Carlos Kameni giving the hosts the lead.
It was a major blow to the visitors who had come to the Bernabeu primarily to defend and they had trouble changing gears Madrid settled into their game and just before the half-hour they nearly scored an exact replica of the first goal but this time the header flew just wide.
Seconds later however the second goal came as Kaka pounced on the rebound after Raul's shot had been saved to steer the ball home. Espanyol hadn't scored away from home since September and this already looked like a foregone conclusion.
As the half wore on Los Meregues were the only side that looked like scoring and Raul was only denied by an acrobatic save from Kameni after heading towards goal. The Cameroonian keeper continued to keep the scoreline respectable but his side could produce nothing at the other end and Los Periquitos went into the break two behind.
Given Espanyol's troubles on the road they were not expected to cause too many troubles in the second period but Ivan Alonso nearly caused a shock early on seeing his shot well saved by Iker Casillas after he had been played through. However it was a false dawn as Madrid continued to dominate with Marcelo seeing his drive flash just wide of the post minutes later.
Just before the hour mark Kaka thought that he had scored his second of the night but his snapshot bounced back off the post after he had been set up by Karim Benzema. Espanyol's only threat was coming from set pieces and Javi Marques was not too far off with one from the edge of the box which was as close as the visitors had come all night.
With twenty minutes remaining the hosts had a glorious chance to seal the game but Alvaro Arbeloa somehow lobbed over the bar from inches out having found his way behind the defence and been picked out by Granero. Soon afterwards Gonzalo Higuain who had only just come on blazed over from a tighter angle following a corner.
The match had stalled somewhat with Madrid happy to hold on to their lead and Espanyol looking unlikely to pose any threat. Still there was time for a late third when the two subs combined Rafael Van Der Vaart releasing Higuain who duly took the ball around Kameni and tapped into the empty net.
That proved to be the final action of the match as Real Madrid ensured that the gap at the top remained at five points.
